Sophie was rescued in April, 2011 from having been poorly mistreated and improperly bred. When the new owners took her to the vet for her first visit, they said she had heart worms. Normally, The Sergei Foundation would not support heart worm treatment as it can be prevented with proper “parenting” care and monthly medicine. However, they adopted her with this unknowing condition. Further, their need was great; the owner was in the Army (stationed in Iraq for 15 months). He and his wife have 5 children under the age of 5; the second to the youngest, Christian, was born with a congenital heart defect in 2010 and underwent two open heart surgeries before he was 6 months old. He had a stroke following the second surgery and was partially paralyzed.
The family having been denied for care credit and wanting to keep Sophie as a blessing that came to their troubled family, The Sergei Foundation worked to pay for half of the treatment with a family member contributing the balance.
